At “Best Skill” on Canal Road East in Causeway Bay, they believe in repairing and saving things rather than just wasting them and throwing them away.
The owner of Best Skill, Mr. HUI Kwok Ming started out as a locksmith and key maker. But in order to make a decent living, he expanded into other areas and started repairing shoes. After learning this craft, he started repairing handbags too as many customers asked him to try. When asked if the variety of items affects the repair process, Mr. HUI usually laughs and says “Well, we are in the business of repairing, not manufacturing. Although every pair of shoes or bags are repaired differently, the methods are similar. Now, I just look at what needs to be repaired and simply get it done.”
Mr. HUI finds his career very meaningful and will repair any shoes on request if he can. One of his most memorable moments was when a customer brought in an old pair of his late father’s shoes to be repaired so that he could keep them as a momento. While we were talking to Mr. HUI, he was constantly approached by customers leaving their bags and shoes to be repaired. After all, giving items an extended life is the whole purpose of Best Skill.
