Happy Friday, everyone! The word ‘Friday’ is a pure joy to 9-to-5er, and here at Lei Shun Court, there is one tattoo shop – Fridays Tattoo HK, in which the name is inspired by Happy Friday and hoping people can enjoy without pressure here.
Tattoo parlours depicted in Hong Kong movies are often seedy and secretive. Many local tattoo parlours are in hard-to-find upstairs shops which makes them even more intriguing! The two shop owners, Jamie and Wang originally decided on an upstairs shop as their first choice for privacy and a quieter environment compared to a ground floor shop. But Jamie told us that the ground floor location was made possible by a casual remark from Ah Fat, owner of a neighbouring shop, Roadmentic. “We were planning to move and while chatting with him, he said there was a vacant and quiet shop next door and suggested that we should set up shop here.” After discussing with Wang, they decided to rent the premises.
When they finally opened, Wang found that doing business on the ground floor shop can be quite interesting. “I remember once, when I looked up, there was an old lady standing in front of the door, not moving. Because she was quite petite with only her head visible from inside the shop, I thought it was a ghost! Once I realised that she was a real person, my heart stopped pounding.”
When asked if they regretted moving to the ground floor, both Jamie and Wang said they have no regrets. In fact, they found out that it was easier to reach out to the neighbourhood from this ground floor location. This attracted people from all walks of life to try their hand at tattooing. It changed their perception of tattoo art and turned them into tattoo artists that are truly “grounded”!
