【Skateboard Coach Mouse Sir】Sound Advice for Young Skaters

The Lee Gardens Skateboard Fest 2022 is delighted to invite Star Coach Mouse Sir to participate in this year’s event. A veteran in skateboarding for over 20 years, he is encouraged to see the growing popularity of this sport in Hong Kong. “Back then, we often get strange looks from passers-by when we skateboarded on the streets. There were very few places where we could practise. We could only hone our moves in parks or on less crowded streets. Times have changed and now we have our own skateboard association and even a skateboard fest which has been running for the last two years organised by the Lee Gardens Association. This has been instrumental in encouraging more people to try skateboarding.”

In his many years of teaching, Mouse Sir has encountered students of all ages, from as young as 4 years old to over 50 years old. Riley, aged 9, is one of his students, having met him by chance two years ago at the age of 7. For a beginner like Riley, skateboarding poses an element of danger, and falls are common.

According to Riley, he didn’t seem to mind falling: “We learn how to fall from the very beginning. For example, when we fall, we try to land on our backs. This reduces the impact significantly.” Meanwhile Pak Lam and Gaku, who are of similar age to Riley, will also be participating at the fest. Both have taken up an interest in skateboarding since young. Through hard work and constant training, they have developed their own style and signature moves.

Is skateboarding only for boys? Not at all! Meet Shuiyan, a 19-year-old local female skateboarder. After seeing the cool skateboarders at a skatepark, she bought her own skateboard and mastered her moves by observation. She also met like-minded people and would often go to the skatepark to practise and learn from other fellow skateboarders.
Mouse Sir believes there is no one way to learn skateboarding, but one must have persistence: “Learning to skateboard is not just about learning skills and tricks, it’s also about learning how to push yourself and build tenacity. And to succeed, you need to work hard. You may have the talent but in the world of skateboarding, you can’t stay in shape if you don’t train. You can only improve if you practise hard.”
