【POINT de DEPART】12 years of pride through sweat and toil

“Are you proud of what you have achieved in the last ten years?” This is what POINT de DEPART is all about.

The two founders of POINT de DEPART, Ning and Tsz, met at university and decided to open a fashion shop after they graduated. In the early days, POINT de DEPART was just a side hustle. After two to three years into the business, however, Ning found that it was difficult to run the shop properly part time, so she left her day job. Meanwhile Tsz was studying fashion, and working in the film industry while she put her knowledge of fashion design into practice at the shop. It was not until recently that Tsz officially left the film industry and joined POINT de DEPART full time. Looking back over the past 12 years, the smiles on the faces of this duo reflect their pride and joy.

Starting a new business is never easy but maintaining it requires even more effort! On the day of the interview, POINT de DEPART celebrated its twelfth year. Ning and Tsz said in unison that the journey had been a bumpy one but thanks to their ‘concave-convex’ personalities, it kept them going. “I’m in charge of the creative process while Ning oversees operations. We have our roles” said Tsz. Meanwhile, Ning added with a smile “Even to this day, we still work in the same space every day. Tsz works at the back of the shop while I take care of the needs of our customers in front. We quarrel occasionally, but don’t hold a grudge. We’re best mates again the next day.”

The duo has created a ‘living room’ and a ‘paradise’ at the shop. Many people may think a fashion shop should make use of every inch of space to showcase their products. However, Tsz believes “Customers want more than just shopping, they want to get to know us. Not just about fashion, but more about our interesting lives.” The ‘living room’ and ‘paradise’ space has a special place in the community and is a testament to their hard work.

When asked if they had any regrets about opening a shop in Causeway Bay during the epidemic period, they both laughed! The had argued about whether they should rent the unit, but in the end, they felt they had to take the opportunity when it came along. They created a special plaque for the shop’s opening with the Chinese characters “Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter”. The plaque is a reminder of their original intention: to be totally committed throughout the entire process, to maintain a healthy mindset, and always to ensure the quality of their products.
